Collector’s Notes

This Porygon-Z is a 1st Edition Holo Rare from Collection Y (XY1), one of the two sets that launched the XY TCG era in late 2013. The 1st Edition stamp marks this as an artefact from the very beginning of this classic era. The card features a stunning “shattered glass” holographic pattern that perfectly complements the digital and slightly chaotic nature of Porygon-Z.

The artwork by the renowned Naoki Saito is a fantastic blend of the natural and the digital. Saito’s clean, energetic style depicts Porygon-Z glitching and zipping through a peaceful, pastoral landscape. The juxtaposition of the highly artificial Pokémon with the natural world is a core part of Porygon-Z’s identity, and the art captures this beautifully, with digital artefacts and light trails contrasting with the green hills.

As a Friend of Geopik, Porygon-Z represents the digital world’s attempt to interface with the physical one. Our geological collection is based on tangible, physical objects—minerals, rocks, and fossils. Porygon-Z is the opposite: a creature of pure data. Its Pokédex entry mentions a programming error that caused its erratic behaviour, much like a flawed geological model might produce an inaccurate map. It serves as a fascinating reminder that our digital understanding of the geological world is always a simulation, an echo of the real, tangible artefacts in our collection.
