Collector’s Notes
This Eelektross is a 1st Edition Holo Rare from the Japanese set Tidal Storm (XY5). As a 1st Edition from the 2014 print run, it’s a lovely artefact from the mid-XY era. Its “Energy Connect” ability was famously powerful in a previous incarnation during the Black & White TCG era, making this card a nostalgic nod for long-time players.
The artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita is a fantastic piece of storytelling. Arita’s mastery of light and shadow is on full display, depicting Eelektross lurking in a dark, underwater cave or ravine. The light filtering down from the surface illuminates the scene, catching the Pokémon’s form and the surrounding bubbles. It creates a sense of mystery and predatory power, perfectly matching the creature described in the Pokédex entry.
As a Friend of Geopik, Eelektross has a fascinating, if indirect, connection to our theme. It is an “EleFish Pokémon” that lives in the deepest parts of the ocean. Its habitat is the abyssal plain and the deep-sea trenches—the most remote and extreme geological environments on our planet. It is a creature of immense pressure and darkness, a world shaped by tectonic trenches and volcanic vents. The artwork’s depiction of a dark, cavernous underwater space perfectly evokes this connection to deep-ocean geology.
