Collector’s Notes

This Azumarill is a 1st Edition Uncommon card from the Japanese set Tidal Storm (XY5). As the direct evolution of the Marill we previously catalogued, it forms a lovely pair from the initial 2014 print run of this XY-era set. The “Uncommon” rarity (marked by a diamond symbol in some sets, but just by its card number here) sits between Common and Rare.

The artwork by MAHOU is soft and painterly, perfectly capturing the gentle nature of Azumarill. MAHOU is an artistic group known for a charming, almost watercolour-like style that gives their illustrations a storybook quality. The pastoral scene, with Azumarill floating happily over a stream amidst falling petals, is serene and beautifully composed.

As a Friend of Geopik, Azumarill offers a wonderful contrast to the collection’s core geological theme. While our Rock-type Pokémon often rely on camouflage that mimics stone and earth, Azumarill’s Pokédex entry highlights a different kind of natural adaptation: aquatic camouflage. Its bubble-like pattern helps it blend in with the water’s surface, a fascinating example of how different creatures adapt to their unique environments, be it a crystal cave or a flowing river.
