Special Exhibit: The Onix – An International Study

Welcome to a special feature for the GeoPik museum. While our primary focus is on Japanese cards, a unique opportunity arose to acquire a curated set of twelve different English-language Onix cards. This lot represents a fantastic cross-section of TCG history, showcasing how this cornerstone geological Pokémon has been artistically interpreted over more than 20 years. We will be exploring these international specimens one by one, creating a dedicated “specimen tray” that celebrates this iconic Pokémon.

Specimen 1: Brock’s Onix from Gym Heroes

Our exhibit begins with a true vintage classic from the year 2000: Brock’s Onix. This card, from the beloved Gym Heroes set, is a hugely significant piece of TCG history. It’s not just a wild Pokémon; it’s an “Owner’s Pokémon,” tied to the most famous Rock-type Gym Leader of all, Brock of Pewter City.

Collector’s Notes

This first specimen is a foundational piece of Pokémon history from the Wizards of the Coast (WotC) era. The Gym Heroes set was the first to prominently feature Pokémon belonging to specific trainers, a concept that added a wonderful layer of lore to the game. As Brock is the original Rock-type specialist, his Onix is arguably one of the most thematically important “Owner’s Pokémon” ever printed.

The artwork is the iconic, clean, and powerful style of Ken Sugimori, the original artist for the Pokémon franchise. This direct link to the series’ origins makes it a highly desirable card. For our Geological Pokémon collection, this card is doubly significant. It not only represents the quintessential Rock Pokémon but also celebrates the human connection to geology through the character of Brock, representing the trainer as a geologist, a researcher, and a partner to his rock-solid team.
