Collector’s Notes

This Dragonite is a truly special card. It is a Full Art “Ultra Rare” (UR), also known as a Secret Rare, from the Japanese set Gaia Volcano (XY5), released in 2014. The card number 085/070 confirms its status as a secret card beyond the main set list. “Full Art” cards are highly prized by collectors because the artwork extends over the entire face of the card, giving them a beautiful, borderless appearance. This card also features an “Ancient Trait” (Δ Plus), a special mechanic from the era, making it even more unique.

The artwork by PLANETA is magnificent. PLANETA is a group of artists known for their incredibly detailed and dynamic 3D illustrations. This piece is a prime example, showing Dragonite soaring powerfully down a river canyon. The sense of motion, the churning water, and the rocky canyon walls create a breathtaking scene. The textured holographic finish applied to Full Art cards of this era makes the entire surface shimmer and catch the light, adding a premium feel to an already stunning piece of art.

As a Friend of Ge-oPik, this Dragonite has a powerful thematic connection. The set it comes from, Gaia Volcano, is named after Gaia, the personification of the Earth in Greek mythology, and volcanoes, a core geological concept. The artwork itself places Dragonite within a massive river canyon, a geographical feature carved out by the geological process of erosion over millions of years. Dragonite, known as the “Guardian of the Sea,” is depicted here as a guardian of the wild, untamed places where water and rock meet.
