Collector’s Notes
This Slurpuff is a 1st Edition Holo Rare from the Japanese set Phantom Gate (XY4), released in 2014. As an early XY-era card, its 1st Edition stamp adds a nice layer of collectability. The card’s beautiful “cosmos” holographic pattern creates a sparkling, dream-like effect in the background, perfectly suiting this whimsical Pokémon.
The artwork by sui is wonderfully charming and sweet. Sui is an artist known for a soft, storybook illustration style that brings a gentle and often playful personality to the Pokémon they draw. This piece is a perfect example, showing a content Slurpuff in a lovely garden at night, with a city skyline in the distance. It’s a peaceful and endearing scene that captures the Pokémon’s pleasant nature.
As a “friend of the collection,” Slurpuff’s connection to our geological theme is a fun exercise in chemistry. Slurpuff is the Meringue Pokémon, based on a confection made primarily of sugar. While not a rock, sugar (sucrose) is a fascinating substance because it can form crystals. In the world of mineralogy, a substance is considered a mineral if it is a naturally occurring, solid, crystalline substance with a defined chemical structure. By a strict definition, the crystalline sugar in a sugar cane fits this description! We can therefore think of Slurpuff as a representative of “organic minerals,” a sweet and delightful counterpoint to the hard silicates and carbonates of its rock-type brethren.
